PUTRAJAYA: The stolen Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F-5E jet engines will be returned to Malaysia after a judicial inquiry in Uruguay.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the judicial inquiry was ongoing.
“The engines are evidence in the inquiry. Their return must be done in accordance with Uruguayan law.
A special judge is presiding over the inquiry and he will decide whether or not to charge those involved,” Gani said at his office here yesterday.
Gani, who was in Uruguay and Argentina from Feb 15 to 19, declined to disclose the number of people investigated by the Uruguayan authorities. He gave an assurance that the jet engines will be returned to Malaysia.
“There is no doubt about it as they belong to the country. We saw and identified the engines while we were there.
“I also appeared before the judge to ask for the return of the jet engines. I also wanted the arms smuggler responsible for buying and shipping the jet engines there to be brought here with all the evidence for a trial,” he said.
The Argentine arms smuggler was in Malaysia before the jet engines were stolen.
While there, Gani was also taken together with the judge to a military facility where the jet engines were kept
